Cannabis Glossary

A bong is a pipe, typically made of glass or acrylic plastic, that uses water to cool the smoke as the user inhales.

Blunt

A blunt is a cannabis cigarette wrapped in tobacco-infused paper. A blunt is typically made by hollowing out a cigar and replacing the tobacco from the cigar with cannabis flower.

Bud

Bud is a term referring to the flowers of the cannabis plant.

Budder

Budder is a solid, creamy cannabis concentrate with a buttery consistency.

Budtender

Budtenders are the attendants that work behind the counter at a dispensary. Budtenders can help you answer questions about strains and recommend products tailored to you.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are the chemical compounds present in the cannabis plant that induce various effects. The two most common cannabinoids are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Cannabis

The term cannabis refers to a plant genus that encompasses three species of plants: Cannabis indica, Cannabis sativa, and Cannabis ruderalis. Cannabis indica and cannabis sativa are both farmed for their psychoactive effects that are used both recreationally and medicinally.

CBD

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the two most common cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant. Unlike other cannabinoids like THC, CBD alone does not induce psychoactive effects.

Concentrates

Concentrates are made when the cannabis flower is compressed at high pressures and dissolved into a solvent. The result of this process is a potent cannabis concentrate (typically more potent than flower) that can take many different forms: oil, shatter, budder, resin, and wax.

Dab/Dabbing

Dab is a slang term referring to a dose of cannabis concentrate that is vaporized and inhaled. Dabbing refers to the process of taking dabs.

Edibles

Edibles are food products infused with cannabis. Edibles can be made from a variety of different food products, but are commonly found as cookies, brownies, chocolates, and gummies.

Flower

Flower is the dry form of the cannabis plant. Cannabis flowers are harvested and dried to be used medically or recreationally.

Hemp

Hemp is the male cannabis plant. Hemp has been used historically to make cloth, rope, pottery, and building materials. Hemp contains less than 0.3 percent THC, and it does induce psychoactive effects.

Hybrid

Hybrids are strains of the cannabis plant that are a genetic cross between two different strains of cannabis.

Indica

Indica is the shortened name for the cannabis strain type Cannabis indica. Indica strains typically induce a relaxing body high that can feel sedative.

Joint

A joint is the slang term for a hand-rolled cannabis cigarette.

Kief

Kief is isolated trichomes that have fallen off the cannabis flower. Kief is known to be extremely potent.

Marijuana

Marijuana is a non-specific term that refers to the female cannabis plant and its flowers. Female cannabis plants are unique to male plants (hemp) because they produce flowers that contain a high amount of cannabinoids.

Pre-roll

A pre-roll is a joint that has already been rolled available for purchase at a dispensary.

Sativa

Sativa is the shortened name for the cannabis strain type Cannabis sativa. Sativa strains induce a head high that can make the user feel more alert, uplifted, and energetic.

Shatter

Shatter is a slang term referring to BHO, a type of cannabis concentrate in which the cannabis flowers have been dissolved in butane.

Strain

A strain is a type of plant species. Throughout history, cannabis growers have selectively bred their plants to create different strains that promise unique highs.

THC

Tetrahydrocannabinol, THC, is one of the two most common cannabinoids that are found in cannabis plants. THC is the element of the cannabis plant that induces its psychoactive effects.

Tincture

A tincture is a liquid form of cannabis that is consumed orally, either as a spray that is applied directly to the tongue, or a serum that is applied under the tongue with a syringe.

Topical

Topicals are a type of cannabis product in which the cannabis flowers have been extracted and infused into a cream-type component. Topicals are useful for medical cannabis patients that suffer from localized, chronic pain. Topicals can take many different forms: creams, lotions, balms, salves, and patches.

Trichome

Trichomes are the glands within the cannabis plant that produce resin. Trichomes are often referred to as “hairs” or “crystals” because of their sticky, hairy appearance on the bud.

Vaporizer

A vaporizer is a tool used to vaporize and inhale cannabis concentrates. Vaporizers heat oils or other concentrates, which produces vapor for inhalation.

Wax

Wax is a form of concentrate that is opaque and soft. Wax is typically lower in THC than other concentrates.
