Vegas Loves: Jack Herer by Desert Grown Farms

Jack Herer

Jack Herer (pronounced like ‘terror’) is one of the most recognized strains among connoisseurs, and for good reason. This Sativa-dominant hybrid was first bred in the Netherlands in the mid-90’s. It’s invigorating, creative high has made it a mainstay in many cultivations, including Desert Grown Farms right here in Nevada.

Who was Jack Herer?

Jack Herer Himself

Herer was a long-time cannabis activist and author. He’s most known for his book, “The Emperor Wears no Clothes,” which is a non-fiction work detailing the cannabis plant and its many known uses and applications. His book is in its 12th edition and has been in continuous print for more than 30 years, making him a foundational voice in cannabis knowledge and reform.

Herer spent much time campaigning for cannabis rights and was the founder and first director of HEMP (Help End Marijuana Prohibition). Herer also ran for the US presidency in 1988 and 1992, receiving a grand total of 5,824 votes. Despite not getting the votes needed to win the Oval Office, he did earn what some would call a more important honor when he was inducted into High Times’ Counterculture Hall of Fame.

Jack Herer passed in 2010 due to complications from a heart attack. While he may be gone, his legacy lives on in the cannabis reform currently sweeping the globe, and through the award-winning strain that bears his name. Other strains also pay tribute to the man, including Jack Skellington, Critical Jack, and Jack’s Cleaner, just to name a few. Basically, any time you find a strain with Jack in the name, it’s probably associated with the man himself.

Jack Herer The Strain

Created by Sensi Seeds, this unique strain has a wonderful balance of euphoric properties. Herer is a Sativa-dominant strain, meaning you’ll find plenty of cerebral invigoration. But, its indica heritage gives it plenty of resin-producing power, letting that initial head rush settle into a nice body high. Being 55% Sativa and 45% Indica, Herer is a finely balanced strain with something to offer everyone.

The result of crossing an unknown Haze with Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk, Herer is a genetic powerhouse. Recognized by Dutch pharmaceutical companies as a legitimate medical strain, Jack Herer began to make its way around the world, gaining many devoted fans along the way. Now, Jack Herer is a staple strain on many dispensary shelves.

Users describe the effects as:

  • Energetic
  • Uplifted
  • Happy
  • Focused
  • Euphoric

Desert Grown Farms version of Jack Herer is a fine example of the strain and its qualities. Starting from an original cut by Cali Kush Farms gives this strain a huge leg up on other Herer strains in the valley. Cali Kush Farms, genetics provider of many cup-winning strains, is a widely recognized cannabis breeder that regularly produces some of the most potent strains on the market.

The buds are large and frosted with trichomes and very sticky to the touch. Bred and harvested by the loving hands of DGF’s staff, this strain showcases what skilled cultivators can do with fine genetics.

The dominant terpenes are Terpinolene, Caryophyllene, and Limonene, and THC percentage averages above 20%. The scent is Haze-forward, with strong earth and pine notes. When smoking, you’ll taste the redolent earth and pine, with a hints of citrus and herbal tones coming through on the exhale. Overall, Jack Herer is a strain worthy of its namesake.

You can celebrate the life and legacy of Jack Herer every fall right here in Las Vegas at the Jack Herer Cannabis Cup. If you don’t want to wait that long, swing in to Oasis where we’ve always got Jack Herer by Desert Grown Farms on the menu.
